Green Cheek Conure
Scientific info:
The Green Cheek Conure ( Pyrrhura molinae) is native to west-central and southern Mato Grosso, Brazil, through northern and the highlands of eastern Bolivia to northwestern Argentina. They prefer forest areas, where they form big flocks and can often be seen at treetop level. This conure is endangered in its natural habitat (CITES II). In the wild, they eat various seeds and fruits and probably other kinds of vegetable matter.
Description:
The Green Cheek Conure is primarily green, with a gray breast, dark head, maroon tail and blue flight feathers. But they do come in a variety of color "mutations" which are Green Cheek Conures, but in different colors! They include Pineapple Green Cheek, Turquoise Green Cheek, Yellow-sided Green Cheek, Cinnamon Green Cheek, Pineapple Turquoise Green Cheek, Cinnamon Turquoise Green Cheek, and Dilute Green Cheek. Breeders like us are constantly looking to create new colors by specific pairings of color to color.
Its average weight is about 70 g - but the general weight range of this species is between 60 to 80 grams. The average length (including tail) is 10 - 11 inches. They reach maturity at 1 to 3 years -- the smaller Conures mature more quickly. In a safe, healthy environment, they can expect to live up to 35 to 40 years.
Personality:
I love all Conures but am particularly fond of the Green Cheek Conures. The Green Cheeks have big personalities for such small birds. They have become a favorite in the pet trade because of their sweet personalities and fun disposition. They are playful, affectionate and intelligent.
Green Cheeks are not considered the best talkers. However, some particularly smart Green Cheeks learned to talk quite well, according to their owners. The majority of green cheeks say only a few things, and there is no guarantee that they will ever learn to talk. They are considered the "quiet Conure", as they are by far, less vocal then other Conures.
They are cuddly birds! It is said that they are second only to the cockatoos in terms of cuddliness. They like to be held (although some like it more than others) and can learn tricks such as lying on their backs and "kissing."
They are a great "beginner" bird, or a step up from a Parakeet. Green Cheek Conure's, like all Pyrrhura's, have a sweet nature, love to entertain, and genuinely like being with their people. All the babies here LOVE to come out of their cages and fly from person to person. Like all parrots, they go through a "nippy" stage, but with proper training, they will be taught to stop, and they learn these commands very quickly.
Attention:
Like all parrots, the Green Cheeks are social birds. They do require daily interaction with their social group, entertainment, things to do -- or else they will become bored and develop behavioral problems. In the wild, they would never leave the company of their flockmates. In a captive pet situation, a hand-fed Conure requires the same social interaction from you and your family.
Diet & Caging:
It's best to keep your Green Cheek Conure where the center of activity is, usually the family room. During this time some direct interaction should be provided, such as talking to your pet, petting it, while you surf the internet, watch tv or go about your other activities.
MINIMUM cage size is 18 X 18 X 20. Bar spacing should be 1/2" to 5/8". A Cockatiel cage is suitable.
A Commercial Small Parrot diet that contains Pellets, Seed, Nuts, and Dried Fruit should be supplemented with FRESH Fruit and Veggies. All parrots enjoy a warm breakfast mash of beans, oatmeal, pasta, and yams.
Suitable Living:
Green Cheek Conures are suitable for Apartment living, as long as you have a single bird. These are quiet birds! For allergy sufferers, these birds produce little or no dust. They have oil glands, and do enjoy bathing on a daily basis because of these glands. So, for those with allergies, no need to worry! These are the birds for you!
Notes:
Many breeders and bird/pet stores can make misleading statements, and label these Conures as: Pineapple Conure, Cinnamon Conure, Turquoise Conure, Yellow Side Conure, and Fancy Green Cheek.
Please know that these terms are misleading and inaccurate! A Green Cheek is a Green Cheek no matter what color! They are not subspecies nor are they a different type of Conure! Green Cheeks come in several different color varieties called "mutations". They are either a naturally occurring color or a selectively bred color, but all in all it is still a Green Cheek!

Notes:
Many breeders and bird/pet stores can make misleading statements, and label these Conures as: Pineapple Conure, Cinnamon Conure, Turquoise Conure, Yellow Side Conure, and Fancy Green Cheek.

Green Cheeks come in several different color varieties called "mutations". They are either a naturally occurring color or a selectively bred color, but all in all it is still a Green Cheek!
Normal Green Cheek Conure
The normal color of Green Cheeks is a green body, muted black/grey head, white "eye liner", blue flight feathers and a maroon tail.
Pineapple Green Cheek Conure
Pineapple is a color variety originally produced by breeding a Cinnamon that carries the Yellow Side color to a Yellow Side. It is a vibrant color of Reds and Yellows that vary in intensity with each bird. The Pineapple Green Cheek Conure is a beautiful color.
Turquoise Green Cheek Conure
Little is known about this color variety. It is not a true "blue" as there are touches of green, which is why it is called Turquoise or Teal. It is a recessive color. It can be bred with Cinnamon (that carries the Turquoise color) to make a lighter version, a Pineapple (that carries the Turquoise color) pairing will look like a Pineapple with blue wings, a Yellow Side (that carries the Turquoise color) pairing will create brighter blues, intense greens and red patches. The Turquoise Green Cheek Conure is a great variety that may be "the key" in producing LOTS of different colors!
Cinnamon Green Cheek Conure
The Cinnamon variety is a color trait that prevents the conversion of brown feather pigment to black. The result is a pretty, muted body coloring with a cinnamon head. The Cinnamon Green Cheek Conure resembles the Pineapple color but with less intensity, even though the color is muted, diluted or dulled, this color is still very stunning!
Yellow Side Green Cheek Conure
Yellow-Side is perhaps the most colorful of all, sometimes surpassing the best Pineapple. The intense reds, yellows and blues vary in shade and amount by each bird. Most will have red feathers around the upper eyelids, making them look like they are wearing red eye liner! This was a natural color that was then taken and bred for. But little is known about why this is a natural color and how it came to be.
Green Cheek Conures range in price from $200.00 up to $650.00 depending on Color Variety. Please inquire for exact pricing
