Blue Crown Conure
Scientific Information:
The Blue Crown Conure (Aratinga acuticaudata) is native to South-western Mato Grosso, Brazil, lowland Eastern Bolivia, Uruguay, Buenos Aires and La Pampa in Argentina.
This conure has gained fame after being featured in "Paulie" - the story of a talking parrot and his adventures while trying to return to Marie - the little girl who raised him. It is also called Blue Crowned Conure.
Description:
Blue Crown Conures are quite large, generally growing to about fourteen and a half inches. Their wingspans are generally around seven and a half inches; and they weigh between 3 - 4.6 oz (84 - 130 grams). Although the birds are primarily green, the crowns of their heads are blue. There are two shades of blue on a Blue Crown Conure's head: a bright, darker blue and light, sky blue-tinged shade. Their green bodies offer a variety of green shades. They have the white eye-patch typical of Conures and their bills are usually bi-colored. The upper beak is horn colored and the lower beak is usually black, typically the lower beak is horn colored until maturity. The Conures with bi-colored bills are often called Sharp-Tailed Conures. The underside of a Blue Crown Conure's tail is a variegated shade of red, ranging from pink-red to dark rust. Their average expected lifespan is 25-35 years
Personality / Blue Crowns as Pets:
The Blue Crown Conures are known for their intelligence, sweet dispositions and playfulness. They do not make good apartment birds, as they are destructive and are known to be very noisy. Both sexes are known to learn tricks and talk; however, their talking ability is nothing like it was implied in the movie "Paulie".
The Blue Crown Conures are loving and devoted companions; but are can be bossy and boisterous. They have a very high energy level and toys and a playpen and plenty of out-of-cage activity must be provided to meet their requirements. They are generally not as rowdy or nippy as some other Conure species can be.
Diet and Caging:
The Blue Crown requires a balanced diet of Fruits, Veggies, Pellets, Seen, and Nuts. A commercial Parrot blend with additional fresh Fruits and Veggies will keep your Blue Crown Conure happy and healthy! MINIMUM cage size is 20 X 20 X 24, this is a large Conure, and they require LOTS of room, a larger cage is always better. Bar spacing should be no more then 3/4", 3/4" being ideal
