Black Cap Conure
Scientific Information:
The Black-capped Conure, Pyrrhura rupicola - also known as the Rock Conure or the Sandia Conure - is native to the western Amazon basin from Peru to Bolivia and possibly the western edge of Brazil. Its preferred habitat includes humid lowland forests. The average flock size consists of 20-30 Black-Capped Conures; smaller groups during the breeding season.
Description:
This conure averages 9.8 inches in length and weighs around 2.5 ounces. Its plumage is mostly green with a dark brown-black cap, whitish scaly neck & breast, red wing coverts (upper, not lower - along leading edge) and a black beak. The breast feathers are dark with light tips, rather than the opposite. Young Black Cap Conures have more green on their wing edges and primary coverts than do adults.
Personality:
The Black-capped Conure is one of the quieter Conure species, yet they share the same affectionate, inquisitive and playful personality as the Green Cheek Conure. The Black-Cap Conure is said to be more laid-back than most conures, but they have also been described as timid with new people. They love human companionship and can be taught a few words or phrases and tricks. Black-caps are cuddly birds.
Diet and Caging:
A Commercial Parrot blend of Pellets, Seeds, Nuts and dried fruit should be supplemented everyday with FRESH fruits and veggies. All parrots enjoy a warm mash breakfast of beans, oatmeal, pasta and yams. MINIMUM cage size for a Black-Cap is 18 X 18 X 20. Bar spacing of less than 1/2". A Cockatiel cage is suitable.
Suitable Living:
Black Cap Conures are suitable for Apartment Living. For those with allergies, these birds produce little to no dust. They have oil glands, so, allergy sufferers need not worry!
