Tue, 27 Mar 2012 23:52:33 -0500WeeblyTue, 17 May 2011 22:50:31 -0500http://www.conurequeen.com/1/post/2011/05/conure-babies-are-loud.htmlOur baby conures are sweet, loving and the clowns of the parrot world.  But understand fully, if you adopt an Aratinga parrot, the bird will be loud in its vocalizations.  They will yell in the morning to welcome the new day and they will yell in the evening to welcome the moon.  They will also yell throughout the day to speak with other birds.

We initially began to raise conures due to our beloved pet Rocky.  She is a steady, quiet, gentle and loving Nanday conure.  Though she would "welcome" the day and say "goodnight' to the sun, rarely was she too loud or too vocal.  We found her to be affectionate, of 'good' behavior and she gives us many hours of joy.

But we did need to establish routines.  Much like children that will become unruly without discipline, a conure without a routine will attempt to establish "his view of the world".  Rocky would insist on few things.  She wished to be greeted in the morning (this did not involve out of cage time but a simple hello and give me kisses).  She knew she would come out of her cage around 7 pm  and would yell if this did not come to pass. And she loves popcorn....let me make this clear.  If you are making popcorn, she will scream until she has those lovely white kernals in her dish... again and again. It is her only vice.

But the trick to such a lovely pet was consistency.  She did not mind our schedule, our view of the world, but she minded greatly if it changed substantially.

"Hi Nicole,

Just thought you would think it was funny to know what happened this morning. As you know, Benny our foster cockatiel was adopted last night. We had him for 5 weeks and every morning he would start his day by saying “Pretty bird” over and over around 6 am. Maui and Hugs would never make a peep. This morning it was very quiet when I was getting ready for work. I went and fed both birds and then next thing I know our parakeet, Hugs, started chirping and it strangely sounded liked pretty bird to me. Our son got up and he agreed that it sounded like the parakeet was chirping pretty bird but we didn’t think anything of it. My husband was off of work today and I was gone by the time he got up. He called me to say he had Maui on his shoulder this morning and he said very softly “pretty bird”. Chris said he repeated it and Maui said it again. It is a good thing that Benny didn’t have a potty mouth!  I guess Benny made a lasting impression on them! Hope Wonka and the rest of the bunch is doing well. Have a great weekend."

Our little "special baby" who was hatched from the "bad egg" went home on 6/26/2010. 

He turned out NOT to be a "bad egg" and is a very sweet baby.  He will keep Jessica great company when her husband, who is in the military, is away from home.

I hope he brings Jessica lots of companionship, smiles and laughs!

Rocky went home today as a surprise for Larry from Vicki and Marc for Father's Day/Birthday!  Larry has had birds for a long time, and has had a rough 2 years.  We are very happy that Vickie found us and chose us to be a part of a nice surprise for someone who needed the emotional boost!!!

I hope that Rocky will give Larry lots of smiles, lots of affection, lots of laughter, and many happy years!!

It really is like raising a baby, and there is always worries--worries that the baby would catch a cold, worry that they are not eating enough or the proper foods, etc. 
Each clutch brings the same worries!!!

Buddy has been home for about a week and a half.  We got a wonderful letter from Buddy's people:

Hey, Nicole!  
Well, Buddy's vet visit went swimmingly!!  The vet was really impressed at how healthy he looks, and he behaved like a pro!  He weighs 64 grams today... nice!   She liked the clip that you did and recommended that we keep him that way, even though we want him to fly in the house. 
He can go about 20 feet and get some pretty good height at this level, without the fear of getting into too much trouble with fans and doors and such.  That works for us, since he can fly to us (and does regularly!) easily when we're nearby. 
 It's amazing to me how quickly he's changing.  He's getting around in his big cage without any problem now, and apparently he's a music lover!  There seems to be something about Emmylou Harris that'll start him chattering and bouncing his head... so cute!  He has energy spurts during the day that remind me of when my kids were toddlers!  He's so bright, though, that it's pretty easy to find ways to play with him and help him use up some of his energy. 
I decided to try to switch him over to the Roudybush Crumbles, and he's really taken to it.  I think he'll always enjoy the variety.  We get fresh produce from a local farm during the Summer, and he's REALLY loving that!  In any case, he hasn't missed a beat in his eating.  
Well done!  I hope all is going well with the house hunting and all your new babies.  There certainly is never a dull moment in your life!
